Organizational & Study Skill Building-F.A.Q's
What are Organization & Study Skills?
Effective Organization & Study
Skills enable students to realize their academic
potential.
Knowing what to
study, how to approach studying, remembering
information and expressing what a student knows
almost ensures academic success.
Skills such as note-taking,
time-management, test-taking strategies,
structuring homework environments, understanding
important teacher cues and many other skills can
be taught to increase overall academic
performance. Fortunately, these skills can be
carried with them throughout their life-into
graduation, college-entry and job advancement.
Why do children struggle with Organization &
Study Skills?
Unfortunately, children are not
born knowing how to manage their time,
completing their homework, studying, or
organizing. These skills must be taught.
Children with learning
difficulties often have an even harder time
learning how to get and stay organized.
The most
successful students however, are organized,
manage their time well, study effectively and
complete their homework regularly. They perform
well on tests because they can remember
information and can communicate what they know
to their teachers.
Who might benefit from an Organization & Study
Skill group?
Almost every
student can benefit from enhancing their
organization and study skills. Specifically,
those who will benefit the most are the ones
who:
-
Demonstrate
disorganization (e.g. careless mistakes,
messy book bag/desk, etc.)
-
Fail to
complete and turn in homework assignments on
time
-
Cannot
identify key points in reading and listening
-
Need help in
preparing reports or giving oral
presentations
-
Have trouble
studying for and taking tests
-
Display
difficulty organizing their thoughts and
written output
How will my child benefit from joining an
organization & study skill group?
Learning
organizational and study skills can make
learning faster and easier. Students will
struggle less at school, enjoy learning more,
become more confident, and feel proud of their
improved academic performance.
How will these skills be taught to my child?
The Organization
& Study Skill Group your child participates in
will be both fun and educational. Core
strategies for teaching these skills will be (1)
modeling, (2) practicing, and (3) feedback.
Each session will cover different skills, but
children will be encouraged to continue
utilizing skills from previous weeks. Children
will be rewarded for their success in learning
and practicing new skills both during the group
and at home.
